
30-Year-Old Man Died after Officer-Involved Shooting in Maine
A 30-year-old man died Saturday night after an officer-involved shooting in Skowhegan.
Man Pointed Gun in the Direction of Officers
The Skowhegan Police Department said Kenneth “Carlos” Ortega from New York fired a gun in the air and then pointed it in the direction of the officers.
Police Responded to Suspicious Activity
Police had responded to the scene around 6:30 pm after a call to a Water Street residence about suspicious activity. The resident had passed away earlier in the day, according to WABI News.
Man and Woman Leaving House did not Comply
When officers arrived at the house, they saw Ortega and a woman leaving and ordered them to stop.

Fired Shot in the Air and Pointed Gun Towards Police
Ortega did not comply with the commands and fired a gun in the air. He then turned the gun towards police and was shot by Officer Benaiah Willhoite, said Skowhegan PD.

Man Died at Hospital from Injuries
Ortega was seriously injured and taken to the hospital where he died.

Officer Put on Administrative Leave as Standard Protocol
Willhoite was put on administrative leave as is standard protocol. The Maine Attorney’s Office is investigating the case.
