Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Attempted Murder in Maine
A 35-year-old man will spend 18 years in prison for trying to strangle and kill the mother of his children and assaulting an officer in Waterville.
30 Year Sentence with 18 Years in Prison
Irineu Goncalves from Revere, Massachusetts was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years with all but 18 years suspended for Attempted Murder, Domestic Violence Criminal Threatening and Assault on an Officer.
Attacked Mother of his Children Behind Motel
The incident took place behind the Holiday Inn Express on Main Street in June 2023.
Strangling Woman when Police Arrived
When police arrived on the scene, Goncalves was on top of the woman and “actively strangling her,” according to News Center Maine.
Police said Woman was Strangled and Beaten
The woman from Vassalboro was seriously injured and “appeared to be severely beaten in addition to the strangling,” said police.
Man Resisted Arrest and Assaulted an Officer
When police tried to apprehend Goncalves, he resisted arrest and it took several officers to subdue him and take him into custody. One officer was injured.
No Contact with Woman or Kids
The sentence includes no contact with the women and the two children when he is released. Goncalves will also serve six years of probation.
