Tractor-Trailer & 240 ft Windmill Blade Struck Bridge in Maine
A tractor trailer carrying a 240 foot windmill blade rolled over Friday morning after hitting a railroad bridge on Route 1 in Stockton Springs.
Tractor-Trailer and Windmill Roll Over after Crash with Bridge
The Maine State Police said “the driver of the tractor trailer did not position the vehicle far enough into the left lane to navigate the lower side of the train trestle resulting in the crash. The windmill blade, mounted on large brackets, struck the trestle, causing the truck, trailer, and blade to roll over.”
Road Closed and Bridge Damaged
The crash shut down Route 1 around 5:30 am. The bridge had minor damage from the impact and collision.
Officials said “turning the vehicle around is not feasible”
“Due to the length of the windmill blade, turning the vehicle around is not feasible. The only viable option is to load the blade onto another trailer and reverse it back to Searsport,” said Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.
Windmill Transferred to Another Tractor-Trailer
The large windmill blade was transferred to another tractor-trailer and taken back to Searsport early Saturday morning around 4:30 am.
Road Reopened to Traffic
Route 1 was closed in the area with traffic rerouted. Route 1 has since been reopened.
