Natalie Portman Says Ashton Kutcher Earned Triple Her Pay for ‘No Strings Attached’
UPDATE (1/12): Ashton Kutcher responded very positively to Portman's call for a closing to the pay gap, and tweeted "So proud of Natalie and all women who stand up for closing the gender pay gap!"
ORIGINAL STORY (1/11): Like several actresses before her, Natalie Portman recently opened up about the wage gap in Hollywood between men and women, admitting her co-star Ashton Kutcher was paid three times more than her for the 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached.
“I knew and I went along with it because there’s this thing with ‘quotes’ in Hollywood,” she said in the February 2017 issue of Marie Claire via The Huffington Post. “Your quote is the highest you’ve ever been paid. His quote was three times higher than mine so they said he should get paid three times more.”
Portman says she wasn’t upset at the time, noting actors are often given exorbitant paychecks as it is, but she recognizes the enormous inequality between her pay and Kutcher’s.
“I wasn’t as pissed as I should have been!” she said. "I mean, we get paid a lot, so it’s hard to complain. But the disparity is crazy.”
“Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar," Portman continued. "In Hollywood we are making 30 cents to the dollar.”
Portman -- who won an oscar for her role in Black Swan the same year No Strings Attached was released in theaters -- also expounded on her insistence that the forthcoming film On The Basis of Sex, in which she plays Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, be directed by a woman.
"I don’t think women and men are more or less capable, we just have a clear issue with women not having opportunities," she said. "We need to be part of the solution, not perpetuating the problem. As this story is specifically about gender discrimination, I was like, ‘How dare we not hire a female.’"
