Maine State Park 2024 Campground Statistics: A Detailed Look
The Maine Bureau of Parks and Public Lands recently revealed that more than 3.1 million people visited the state's 42 parks and historic sites in 2024, highlighting another strong outdoor recreation year. This impressive figure underscores that people are eager to get outside, whether for health, recreation, or simply to escape boredom.
Maine State Parks Continue to Be Very Popular
This was the third year out of the last four that saw visitation numbers exceed 3 million. One major factor contributing to this is the consistently strong campground visitation numbers. The Bureau reported 288,800 campground visits in 2024. While this was slightly lower than 2023 (a 0.8% decrease), it remains a very optimistic figure for the state.
Maine has 12 state parks with campgrounds, though Baxter State Park, known for its own separate campground system, isn't included in these statistics. The parks span the entire state, from coastal areas to Aroostook County, Downeast Maine, the Midcoast, Western Foothills, and Southern Maine.
Top Maine Campgrounds: 2022 Visitation Highlights
Sebago Lake State Park, located in Raymond, claimed the top spot with over 115,930 campground visits. This outpaced the competition by a wide margin, with Lily Bay State Park (29,419 visits) coming in a distant second.
Meanwhile, the smallest park, Warren Island State Park, recorded 1,446 visits in 2024. That's actually quite impressive, considering it only has 12 campsites and is located on a relatively remote island.
