It’s Ice Harvest Time for Amish in Aroostook County [PHOTOS]
No electricity means no refrigerators for the Amish living in northern Maine. So how do they keep food cold year round? This is how...
These photos taken in Easton, Maine show how difficult life is without electricity! The Amish are not allowed to use any electricity so they must do things the old way.
Horses pull a cart to a frozen body of water where the men then cut chunks of ice into blocks and stack them on the cart using ice tongs. The blocks are cut with long ice saws and is no easy task. The full cart of ice is then carted back to a barn where it is stored in sawdust for insulation. This ice will and must last them through the summer.
