Troopers said 45-year-old Edward Stanhope died when his 2012 Harley Davidson went off Route 35 on a curve and crashed into a tree. The accident was reported just before 11 p.m. Saturday. Troopers said speed and alcohol are likely factors.

Stanhope was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland.

The Bureau of Highway Safety said this was the 11th motorcycle fatality of the year in Maine. Earlier in the week, four people were seriously injured in motorcycle accidents in Aroostook County.
