Two people were displaced Wednesday evening by a fire that destroyed an apartment house and two other buildings on the State Road in Castle Hill.

The Mapleton, Castle Hill, Chapman Fire Department was dispatched to the fire at 5:12 p.m., according to firefighter Robby Gross. Crews arrived to find the garage and barn fully engulfed and the blaze had spread to the attached two-story apartment house and an adjacent field.

Presque Isle, Washburn, Ashland, Caribou and Easton Fire Departments provided mutual aid, as well as the Maine Forest Service.

Crews were able to knock down the main part of the fire and concentrated efforts to contain the blaze the rest of the evening. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the garage area, Gross said. Firefighters cleared the scene at around 9:20 p.m.

Both tenants made it out safely and there were no injuries.

The Aroostook County Sheriff's Department, Crown Ambulance and EMERA also assisted on site.

The property, which was a total loss, is owned by Rowell McHatten of Castle Hill and was insured.

Disaster volunteers from the American Red Cross of Maine were working with the two tenants to ensure that they have food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials.
