A Woodland man is behind bars after a domestic dispute took place in Aroostook County this past weekend.

According to Sheriff Darrell Crandall, Deputies were called to a home on Church Street in Woodland later Sunday evening after a report of a man and woman fighting at the home. When Deputies arrived the man had left the home.

Through interviews of witnesses they learned that 36-year-old George Hallyburton had assaulted a woman. Deputies searched the area, but could not find him.

A short time later Deputies were called back to the home, as the man had returned and the couple was fighting again. Deputies found Hallyburton driving into a nearby driveway, in his sister’s vehicle. Hallyburton was arrested and charged with Domestic Assault, OUI and violation of conditions of release.

Hallyburton was on bail at the time of this arrest for a felony drug trafficking charge. Hallyburton had previously failed to appear in court on that drug charge and was arrested earlier this year, in North Carolina, as a fugitive from justice. Hallyburton fought extradition and a Governor’s warrant was obtained to compel his return. In February, Sheriff’s Deputies flew to North Carolina and brought Hallyburton back to Maine to face the drug charges. He was granted bail, once again, on March 13.

Hallyburton will make an initial court appearance on the assault and OUI, from the jail, by video on Wednesday.  If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail.
