A 81-year-old woman died Monday after colliding with a tractor-trailer in the breakdown lane on I-95 in York.

Woman Died at the Scene of the Crash with a Tractor-Trailer

Janice Goldsmith was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:14 pm. The fatal crash happened on the Maine Turnpike near mile marker 5.

Tractor-Trailer in Breakdown Lane with Mechanical Issues

The Maine State Police said a 2022 Western Star tractor-trailer was stopped in the breakdown lane with a mechanical malfunction. Reflective warning triangles were placed near the semi as required.

Woman Collided with Rear of Tractor-Trailer on the Side of the Interstate

Goldsmith’s 2015 Toyota sedan crashed into the rear of the tractor-trailer and she died from her injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Crash Investigation is Ongoing

“The cause of the crash remains under investigation,” Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.

Traffic was Limited to One Lane for Several Hours

Traffic in the area was reduced to one lane for almost three hours as police and crews worked on the scene. The road opened to just two lanes for two more hours.

First Responders Cleared Crash Site on Maine Turnpike

Multiple agencies and first responders were at the crash site assisting in the investigation and clearing the roadway.
