On Monday evening, at the direction of Maine Drug Enforcement agents, Presque Isle Police stopped the couple’s vehicle in Presque Isle. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and found evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing inside the car, according to Maine Public Safety Department spokesman Steve McCausland.

Agents suspected the couple had been manufacturing meth inside their apartment at 1295 Main Street in Washburn. With the assistance of the Washburn Police Department, the apartment house was secured Monday night.

A search of that apartment on Tuesday by MDEA’s lab team, along with personnel from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection found significant evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing inside, McCausland said.

Agents assigned to MDEA’s Aroostook County Task Force in Houlton arrested 22-year-old Robert McKenzie of Washburn.  He was charged with Class 'A' Aggravated Unlawful Operation of a Meth Lab. The charge was aggravated due to a prior drug felony and the fact that the illegal operation was taking place inside a multi-unit apartment building.

Twenty-two-year-old Crystal Smith of Washburn was also charged with Class 'A' Aggravated Unlawful Operation of a Meth Lab.

Both are currently being held at the Aroostook County Jail.  Bail has been set at $20,000 in cash apiece or $100,000 surety.
