The Eagles were among the five honorees at the annual Kennedy Center Honors event in 2016, which aired on CBS on Dec. 27. Along with the "Life in the Fast Lane" collaboration, the iconic country rock band was lauded with a spoken tribute from Ringo Starr and vocal renditions of some of their most well-known songs, including "Peaceful Easy Feeling" performed by Gill, "Take It Easy" performed by the Kings of Leon, "Heartache Tonight" performed by Seger and "Hotel California" performed by Juanes, Steve Vai and Steuart Smith.
The Eagles were originally supposed to take part in the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, but they decided to postpone the receipt of their award following co-founder Glenn Frey‘s stomach surgery; the band -- Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh -- wanted to accept the award at a time when all four of them could be there to receive it. Unfortunately, Frey passed away on Jan. 18, 2016, and the guitarist's death made the Eagles' moment at this year's Kennedy Center Honors a bit bittersweet. At the 2015 event, Miranda Lambert paid tribute to the band with a moving performance of their 1973 classic, "Desperado."
Along with the Eagles, James Taylor, Mavis Staples, pianist Martha Argerich and actor Al Pacino were also honored at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors. The ceremony was hosted by television personality Stephen Colbert.
