A small plane made an emergency landing in the southbound lane of I-295 in Bowdoinham Tuesday morning just after 10 a.m.

UPDATE:

State Police say the pilot  and his passenger both had minor injuries. The pilot, John Gayley of Bowdoin, had facial injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center. His passenger, Rodney Voisene of Bowdoin, has a minor injury to an arm. and was taken to a local hospital to be checked. Gayley told troopers he had taken off from the Bowdoinham airfield  and the engine stalled when he attempted to switch fuel tanks. He had planned to fly to the airfield in Turner, said police.

Gayley landed the 1947 Cessna in the southbound lane, against traffic. The plane then veered into the guardrail along the breakdown lane. Police said, one vehicle had to swerve to avoid the plane as it landed,.

The FAA has been notified and is due on scene shortly.  A wrecker will remove the plane from the road this afternoon and southbound traffic will be disrupted during that time.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Police said, The plane collided with a guardrail off the breakdown lane. The pilot walked away from the wreck. State Police say southbound traffic has not been disrupted, although the road may be reduced to one lane later when decisions are made on removing the plane from the highway.
