New Data Shows the Price of Home Heating Fuel in Maine as We Head Into Colder Months

The warmer months in Maine don't just offer a reprieve from the bitter cold of Maine winters, but, it also offers a break from having to pay for heating fuel. And, with everything getting so much more expensive week by week, it's been a very welcomed break.

However, as we're just days away from the first day of October, we're quickly realizing that soon it will be time to once again start "filling the tanks." But how much is it going to cost us to heat our homes this winter?

Well, it depends on what region of Maine you live in and what type of fuel you heat your home with.

Taking a look at information from the State of Maine Governor's Energy Office, we're able to see the current fuel prices to the nearest cent. This information was last updated on September 11, 2023, according to the website.

The average cost of number 2 heating oil (if you have a tank shielded from the harsh cold) is $3.90 per gallon statewide. The cheapest #2 heating oil is currently found in Downeast Maine at an average of $3.86 per gallon. Of course, those are just the averages, the Governor's Energy Office reports that some places in Maine could be paying up to $4.75 per gallon.

If you heat your home with Kerosene (people who have their tanks outdoors and fully exposed to the cold) the average cost statewide is $4.75 per gallon. The most expensive price for K1 can be found in the greater Portland area at an estimated cost of $5.08 per gallon. The cheapest is in West Central Maine at an average of $4.69 per gallon.

Last, but certainly not least, if you heat with energy-efficient propane, you can expect to pay $3.00 per gallon on average statewide. $2.61 is the lowest average cost for propane found in Northern Maine and $3.24 per gallon found in the greater Portland area.
