Maine Winter Food is Different Than Summer Food

Summers in Maine are all about seafood and fresh vegetables: salads and steamed lobsters. Gently broiled scallops and blueberry pie.

But let's face it. Winter in Maine is a totally different story. The weather gets cold. Really cold. The wind makes it colder. A lot colder.

And those light, satisfying summer meals just won't cut it when it comes to warding off the chill.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that these dishes wouldn't taste great in the summer. Most of them would be welcomed at any time of year.

But the heavier foods, with gravies and sauces, beef and beans, butter and cream...those are the foods that warm you from the inside out.

Mainers Welcome Warm Beverages When the Temperatures Drop

In the summer, you're hoisting an ice-cold beer in a frosted mug, and it's amazing. But during a Maine winter, you may switch to an Irish coffee that you can wrap your hands around to soak up the heat.

In my house, it's all about stews and pot roasts during the cold months. My husband makes an incredible venison stew that I'll eat until it's gone. And then I'll ask him to make more.
