The body of a 72-year-old man was found Friday morning near the summit of Mount Washington.

Body Found Near Peak of Mt. Washington

Wardens said a hiker found the body lying on the Gulfside Trail near West Side Trail, about a half a mile from the peak.

Man Found Deceased

“The man was obviously deceased and no lifesaving measures were taken,” said New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division.

Train Used to Transport Body

A train from the Cog Railway was used to help recover the body. A team hiked to the scene and used a litter to bring the body to the train and Base Station.

Driver’s License used to ID Man

A driver’s license was used to identify the man from Virginia. Name was not released until the family is notified.

Cause of Death

“It appears the hiker likely succumbed to environmental exposure, but the exact cause of death is pending autopsy results,” said NH Wardens.

Hiker was “Not Prepared for Conditions”

Wardens said “Little else is known of the hiker. He was dressed in jeans, and had on a dark navy blue raincoat, with brown hiking boots and a small blue backpack. He was not prepared for the conditions that were and are still currently present in the higher summits of the White Mountains. It is likely that he took a train ride up to the summit in the morning or early afternoon on Wednesday and then decided to try and hike down.”
