
51-Year-Old Man Died after Police-Involved Shooting in Maine
A 51-year-old man died Saturday after a police-involved shooting following a domestic assault in Hartford, Maine.
Came at Deputies with a Knife
The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said Eric Newell was shot by two deputies after he came at them with a knife.
Grandfather Called 911 for Assault
Newell’s 80-year-old grandfather had called 911 to report an assault at his residence on Tucker Road.
Tried to Deescalate
“Deputies attempted to deescalate the situation with Mr. Newell but were unsuccessful,” said the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies Issued Commands to Stop
Oxford County Deputies Reece Rodrique and Derek MacDonald issued commands for Newell to stop, but he did not comply.
Under Investigation
Both deputies were placed on administrative leave as standard protocol. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is investigating.
Multiple Agencies on Scene
The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
