What’s The Strangest Thing You’ve Seen On Your Maine Commute?
One of the best things about living in eastern Maine is the lack of a "traditional" commute, full of smog and irate drivers and five-lane highways.
While you may see spots where the wait is a little longer if you happen to take the interstate south, most of the time we're lucky. Aside from potholes and road construction, our views are beautiful and the amount of traffic, relative to other areas of the world, is pretty small.
We do, however, have some of the stranger commutes in some parts of the state, especially on some of the more rural roads.
For instance, a while back, I was headed along Main Road North toward Winterport when I noticed the other drivers in my lane had slowed down a bit. I wondered what the hold-up was, until I saw, rounding the corner, two of the largest rogue swine I have ever laid eyes on!
I had had a similar encounter a couple of years ago, on my way to church one Sunday morning. A herd of large pigs was running amuck along Route 222.
For years, folks who drive along Route 1A, to and from Ellsworth, have reported seeing a goat along the side of the road. The goat is so legendary, in fact, that they've named her Priscilla.
A while ago, another gentleman and his wife even came across a huge Eagle on the side of the road, in Brewer.
It's not unusual for Maine motorists to share the road with deer...
...or moose...
or bear....
...and sometimes a random cow.
It definitely makes for an interesting drive to work, that's for sure.
