Two men from central Aroostook County have been charged with trafficking in heroin following a late night traffic stop in Houlton.

On Sunday, September 23, the Presque Isle Police Department received information concerning a substantial amount of heroin being transported to the Presque Isle area. That  information was shared with Maine Drug Enforcement and passed along to the Maine State Police, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and Houlton Police Dept.

At around 10 p.m. Sunday,  State Trooper Patrick Pescitelli stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on the North Road in Houlton. The vehicle was searched and a significant amount of suspected heroin was found along with a small amount of methamphetamine and a loaded handgun, State Police say.

The two men in the vehicle, 40-year-old Alberto Vasquez of Presque Isle and 32-year-old Jeffrey Sarmiento of Woodland were arrested and transported to the Aroostook County Jail.

Both were charged with Unlawful Trafficking in Schedule Drugs, and Unlawful Possession of Schedule W Drugs. Sarmiento was also charged with Operating After Suspension.
