Put Haystack Mountain on your County Bucket List! It’s right here in our backyard - about 10 miles from Ashland and around 4 miles from Mapleton in Castle Hill.

There are different trails with varying degrees of difficulty to get to the summit. Be prepared with good footwear and bring water, some food, easy to carry belongings, a cell phone, and always have a plan for emergencies.

Once you get to the 1,142' peak, the views are spectacular! You can see Mount Katahdin and Scopan Lake in the distance. You’ll see a lot of the County laid out before you with Mars Hill and the wind mills on the horizon. Quaggy Jo and the Aroostook State Park are part of the panorama too.

The area around Haystack is neatly marked with trail info and more. There are places to have a picnic, but camping is not allowed.

The Maine Department of Transportation has a designated Rest Stop at the base. There's easy access from Route 163. Haystack had a fire lookout in the early 1900's.

Plan your next adventure to Haystack Mountain soon. This time of year with the views will make this one of your best trips ever. Put it on the top of your County Bucket List and enjoy the great Northern Maine!
