Winter Is Coming: Time to Prep Like a True Mainer
Winter is coming, Jon Snow, and soon, we’ll be gazing out our windows with a cup of coffee in hand, contemplating the mega, back-breaking task of shoveling and then putting it off like your next dentist appointment.
We’re reminded constantly of the potential challenges that come with snowstorms in Maine; the ice, harsh rough winds, and that thick heavy snow.
Even during summer, as each day goes by, we can’t help but notice the damage from last season, like a super nosy neighbor just waiting to pounce on gossip about our rose bush.
Central Maine Power (CMP) and the Maine Emergency Management Agency are already prepping for the snowy season, according to WGME.
And since we all know the weather folks are warning us that this winter is going to be a doozy, it’s high time we start prepping, too.
Now is the perfect time for homeowners to start their own preparations, even if the snow hasn’t started falling yet.
Here are a few important things to take care of now in order to be prepared for our winter storms in Maine:
- Check Heating Systems. Make sure your furnace or boiler has been inspected and cleaned. Stop up on your oil or propane!
- Clean Gutters. You may not guess that this could be a problem if you are new to Maine snow, but cleaning your gutters and downspouts will help stop ice and water damage!
- Stock Emergency Supplies. Build yourself a DYI emergency kit. Include water, nonperishable snacks, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, candles, lighters/matches and blankets. My wife and I also just bought a propane lantern, and it filled the entire kitchen with light when we lost power.
- Prepare Your Home’s Exterior. Trim trees, large branches, and shrubs so that they don't hit and damage your home!
- Grab Snow Remove Toys. Get shovels, snow blowers, and roof rakes.
- Check Insurance. Make sure to look over your homeowner’s policy for coverage on winter damage!
So, as Maine gets ready for yet another winter, make sure to be proactive to make a difference in safety this year.
It'll help reduce the impact of storms and make sure that you are ready for whatever Mother Nature brings. Because with emergency services ramping up for winter, Mainers should join in on the effort!
