A Caribou man is behind bars following an overnight standoff with police at an apartment in downtown Caribou.

The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint around 5:15 p.m. Sunday that a firearm had been stolen from a business in Woodland. Sheriff’s Deputies Reed Clark and Jonathan Stewart responded and identified the suspect as 42-year-old George Lacasse of Caribou.

In an attempt to locate Lacasse and the stolen firearm, the deputies went to an apartment on Grove Street in Caribou as listed on bail papers. When the officers arrived, Lacasse reportedly ran back inside the apartment.

Two individuals told police that Lacasse had been acting erratically and had committed an assault earlier in the day. Caribou Police Officers Kegan McPherson and Amanda Baker arrived to assist and took the assault report while Sergeant Chad Cochran obtained a search and arrest warrant.

According to the Caribou Police Department, Lacasse was uncooperative and barricaded himself inside the apartment with the stolen gun. The Maine State Police Tactical Team was called in and arrived on scene shortly before 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Police say Lacasse surrendered peacefully at 4:16 a.m.
