A 64-year-old man was sentenced to over 5 years for making a false statement to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent.

64 Months to Time Served

Felipe De Jesus Zavala Medel was given 64 months to time served. He was detained on January 29, 2025.

Trying to Cross from Canada to the United States

Zavala Medel is from Mexico and told Border Patrol Agents he was from the United States. He was trying to cross the border in a vehicle from the Canadian side.

False Driver’s License

He gave agents a North Dakota driver’s license with the name “Johny Joe Olivo.” He also signed a Customs Declaration with the false information.

No Documents to Enter U.S.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Zavala Medal “did not have any documents that allowed him to legally enter, reside, or work in the U.S.”

Homeland Security Investigation

He was turned over to immigration authorities. Homeland Security and CBP conducted the investigation.
