We Mainers are all proud of the work the Maine Game Wardens do.

And all of us are tickled that they get a shot at 15 minutes of fame with the Northwoods Law TV series, seen internationally by the way.

They seem so laid back and ‘normal’ on the t.v. show, and the few Game Wardens I know personally are down to earth and don’t come across as Superman, or Superwoman.

But they are.

There is a 14-week advanced Warden School that has hands-on training in many areas that Game Wardens need to excel at.

Things like conservation law enforcement techniques. Search and Rescue. Knowing vehicles- road, off-road, and watercraft.

And then there is the remote training out in the wilderness involving mountainous terrain. Yeah, Katahdin.

On the last day of the training, the class completed a winter ascent of Mount Katahdin, giving them the opportunity to practice skills discussed in the training.

On their way to the summit, they encountered deep snow, drifts, steep icy rock slopes, and 50mph winds.

The experience and skills acquired through this training will equip Maine’s newest Game Wardens to safely and successfully respond to search and rescue incidents across the state.
