The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that almost 100 people were infected with an extremely contagious norovirus at Woods Pond Beach in Bridgton this month.

According to NBC News and the Portland Press Herald, dozens of beachgoers experienced prolonged symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and cramps.

Scientists with the Maine CDC say that Norovirus can be spread by eating contaminated food, coming into contact with a contaminated surface and then touching your mouth, or by having other types of contact with someone who is infected.

Bridgton town manager Bob Peabody told the Press Herald that they have been able to track down about 100 people who were afflicted by the outbreak.

The water at the beach was tested for E. coli and other contaminants, and levels were detected in tap water near the site.
