Lonely Planet Names Maine Top Destination to Visit in 2026
Maine is back in the tourism spotlight once again.
As 2025 is close to wrapping up, tourism in Maine won't reach the levels that the state saw in 2023 and 2024.
Some believed that the "shine" was off of Maine. From overcrowded Acadia National Park to expensive hotspots like Bar Harbor, Camden and Portland, perhaps Maine's moment in the tourism sun had faded.
One prominent travel site doesn't agree. In fact, they believe Maine is one of the top destinations to visit in 2026.
Lonely Planet Believes Tourists Should Explore the Entire State of Maine in 2026
Lonely Planet released their list of the 25 worldwide destinations to visit in 2026. Maine (yes, the entire state) was one of only two U.S. destinations to be listed.
In Lonely Planet's explanation, they hit some familiar favorites. Lonely Planet suggests a stop in Portland to dine at one of the city's world-class restaurants.
Lonely Planet also says a trip to Acadia National Park should be a standard if you don't mind crowds and an early wake-up call.
Lonely Planet also mentions a seaside stroll along Marginal Way in Ogunquit to fully embrace the stunning Maine coastline.
Lonely Planet Also Suggests Getting Lost 'Inland' Through Maine's Lesser Visited Areas
While Portland, Ogunquit and Bar Harbor are all wonderful suggestions, Lonely Planet didn't shy away from one more recommendation. Skipping the crowds and coast and venturing inland.
Maine is home to some tremendously pristine ponds and lakes with plenty of small, charming villages and towns that surround them. Skipping Acadia in favor of a trip to Mt. Katahdin could be the ultimate unplug and play vacation for those tired of staring at their phone or computer.
The Only Other U.S. Destination Highlighted Was North Dakota
Perhaps the theme of Lonely Planet's 2026 Travel Guide is to simply get lost. Amongst some wonderful worldwide places, Lonely Planet also suggests a trip to the plains of North Dakota.
Lonely Planet spotlights Theodore Roosevelt National Park as a chance for visitors to immerse themselves in 'cowboy culture'. That includes 70,000 acres of prairie with painted canyons, roaming wildlife and unique rock formations.
