Get ready for another incredible opportunity to see more stars in the sky than you ever thought possible.

You may think you've seen a star-filled sky—especially if you live in Maine, where light pollution is relatively low in many areas. But even the clearest backyard view can’t compare to what you’ll experience in the vast darkness of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.

Katahdin Woods & Waters is One of Maine's Best Hidden Gems

Officially established in 2016, this national monument spans over 87,000 acres of pure northern Maine wilderness. There’s nothing but untamed landscape, wildlife, and an unspoiled sky. It feels like stepping back in time—to an era untouched by modern technology.

In fact, the skies here are so dark that Outside Magazine named Katahdin Woods and Waters one of the best places in the country for stargazing. It's even said to have the darkest skies east of the Mississippi River, making it a truly ideal place to gaze at the stars.

So, it’s no surprise the monument hosts an incredible annual stargazing event, welcoming both students and adults for a breathtaking look at the universe above.

What an event this is—year after year. It takes everything that’s great about Maine and combines it with the universe’s most awe-inspiring views. I can’t imagine experiencing this as a kid—I would’ve been completely blown away. Who needs a planetarium when you have this?
