What is in a slogan? Is it critical to have the perfect slogan, or is good enough, good enough.

There was a survey recently all across the country about state slogans.
Maine’s slogan, in case it is not etched upon your memory is Dirigo.

Dirigo. From Latin, meaning ‘I Direct’, ‘I Lead’ or ‘I Guide.’

Okay, Dirigo is the slogan. Has been forever. Or close enough, 1820 actually.

A group examined the slogans of the U.S. states and conducted a survey about possible or potential slogans for each state.

These are not to be confused with tourism or business slogans, like ‘Welcome Home’ or ‘The Way Live Should Be’ or ‘Open for Business' or 'Vacationland.'

Here are some examples from the new nation wide survey, California’s current slogan is Eureka.  The survey suggests ‘From Dreams to Reality’. Very ‘Hollywood’, right?

Texas has a current slogan of ‘Friendship’. But according to the survey a newer, fresher choice would be ‘Where Big Hearts Meet Bigger Horizons.’  Might have been inspired by the well known saying, Everything is Bigger in Texas.

Okay, onto our state.

Maine is a state of landscapes. Beautiful pine forests. Rugged coastlines. And the unity of our people.

How about ‘From Pine to Sea, Unity We See’ That was what was suggested for us, and by us in the survey.

Here is the link to explore each state’s alternative slogans.

No matter he slogan or alternative slogan, I’d say we are pretty lucky to be in Maine.
