According to Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Maine Warden Service, 76-year-old Marvin Hedstrom was riding his ATV on the rail bed trail in New Sweden Saturday afternoon. Shortly after 1 o'clock, Hedstrom struck a washed out area just south of the Rista Road crossing, causing his ATV to roll multiple times before coming to a stop in a small beaver flowage.

Fitzpatrick said Hedstrom was not wearing a helmet. He suffered severe head and internal injuries when he was thrown from the machine. He was taken first to Cary Medical Center in Caribou and later flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Mr. Hedstrom passed away Tuesday morning.

The accident remains under investigation. The Maine Warden Service is reminding ATV riders of the importance of always wearing a helmet.
