Visual Capitalist crunched the numbers and determined how much money per year would make you one of the top 1% of earners in every state.
You Need to Make $588,000 Dollars Per Year in Maine to be in the Top 1%
Comparatively to some other states in the country, you only need to make about $588,000 per year to be among Maine's elite earners. That is a heck of a lot of money but it's not even close to the national average to be in the top 1% of income earners.
The national average of top 1% income earners is $787,712. According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary in Maine is about $58,000 per year. You'd need to make 13 times that to reach a national 1% income.
The Top 1% Income in Maine Jumped Substantially From 2023
While many people in Maine continue to struggle financially, some of the wealthiest keep getting wealthier based on a comparison of statistics from Visual Capitalist.
In order to be one of the top 1% income earners in Maine for 2023, you had to make $508,000. The fact that number jumped by $80,000 for 2024 is a bit alarming.
New England is Home to the Highest Annual Top 1% Income Averages
While some of these numbers may be eye popping for Mainers, two other New England states lead the way when it comes to highest average top 1% incomes.

Connecticut has the highest top 1% income in the nation at $1,152,254 dollars. Massachusetts is second in the nation, with an average top 1% income rolling in at $1,113,662 dollars.
