Adults in This Maine City Are Eating the Most Healthily in the U.S.
It sounds like folks from this city in our Pine Tree State aren’t skipping out on fruits and vegetables.
We all know eating fruits and veggies is good for us, but life can get busy, and it's not always easy to get enough.
Some days, we might not get as many as we'd like, and that's okay. What matters is doing our best and finding ways to fit them in when possible. However, this Maine city disagrees and makes time for their fruits and vegetables a lot more than every other city.
Now, looking at our Pine Tree State as a whole, we love fruit, especially our official State Berry, the Wild Blueberry.
Mainers love their wild blueberries for many reasons.
First and foremost, they're a native fruit to the state, so we have a built-in general state pride towards them. Second, wild blueberries are packed with antioxidants and nutrients, making them a healthy choice, which is why we’re talking about them in the first place. And third, they're versatile; they can be used in every meal of the day, from pies to pancakes.
So we know that Maine and Mainers love their blueberries, but which city eats the healthiest in the country?
The personal finance website WalletHub recently released an updated report documenting the 'Healthiest & Unhealthiest Cities in America' in 2024, and the results aren’t surprising at all.
WalletHub’s methodology to determine the healthiest and unhealthiest cities focused on residents’ well-being, comparing more than 180 of the most populated U.S. cities across 41 key indicators of 'good health.' WalletHub’s data set ranges from the cost of a medical visit to fruit and vegetable consumption to the share of physically active adults.
When it comes to overall rankings, San Francisco, CA ranked #1, with our Pine Tree State’s biggest city, Portland, ME, ranking at #25. However, that’s not the metric we’re focusing on.
In regards to the percentage of 'Adults Not Eating Enough Fruits/Vegetables per Day,' Portland, ME ranked #1 with the lowest.
Additionally, in the report, Portland ranked 177th, towards the bottom in 'Mental-Health Counselors per Capita.'
