A 5-year-old boy has died after the canoe he and his mother were in capsized in a stream in the central Maine town of Vassalboro Monday evening.

The Maine Warden Service said 25-year-old Mollie Egold was canoeing with her son, William, in Outlet Stream when the swift current flipped their canoe and they both went into the water. William became trapped underwater against some debris. His mother was able to free him and called for help.

Wardens say the woman and her child were both wearing life jackets and were not in the water long. They were taken by ambulance to Inland Hospital in Waterville to be treated for hypothermia.

William was later transferred by Lifeflight to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where officials say he died overnight.
