Tractor-Trailer Accident Closes Down Trans-Canada near Florenceville [PHOTO + VIDEO]

A major tractor-trailer accident has closed down the Trans-Canada highway just north of Florenceville-Bristol, sent one man to hospital, and created an oil spill along the snow-covered highway.

Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle crash shortly before 10 Thursday morning in the eastbound lanes at the Sipprell Road interchange.  Florenceville-Bristol Fire Chief Andrew Cougle tells us there were three tractor-trailers and a 3/4 ton truck involved in the collision.

Chief Cougle said one tractor-trailer was carrying 37,000 litres of Bunker C fuel oil and the tanker ruptured when it went off the road.  Emergency responders from multiple agencies were on site, including RCMP and a Hazmat team.

One driver was trapped in the cab of his truck and the Bath Fire Department rescued him with the Jaws of Life.   Ambulance NB transported the man to the hospital with severe injuries. Other reports stated that a fourth tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle also went off the road at the accident site.

A 38-mile stretch of the Trans-Canada highway was closed for several hours between Florenceville and Perth-Andover.  The RCMP reports the highway re-opened Thursday evening.
