Compared to last winter’s blitzkreig that began in early November and kept the northern Maine landscape covered in snow for a full five months, this year’s winter seems to be in no great hurry to arrive.

Last year, more than 4 ½ feet of snow had fallen in Caribou by Christmas Day, according to the National Weather Service Office. That snow had melted down to about a foot on the ground when Saint Nick touched down on Christmas Eve.

So far this season, snowfall totals have been in the single digits across most of Aroostook County and the snow has disappeared about as quickly as it came.

Our hopes of having a white Christmas will be boosted by a winter storm set to blanket the County with several inches of snow Monday and Tuesday.

Here’s a look at how much snow had fallen (in Caribou) by Christmas Day in each of the past 5 years:

Year             Snowfall by Dec 25          Snow depth on Dec. 25
