The Mavericks Share Brand-New Single, ‘Damned (If You Do)’ [LISTEN]
The Mavericks have released a brand-new single off of their upcoming album, Brand New Day.
"Damned (If You Do)" is lead by band member Raul Malo's vocals, sung over a Latin-inspired, horn-heavy melody. In the song, Malo sings of the pull between what the heart wants and what the mind says is right.
"Your heart tells you yes / But your mind tells you no / You can't seem to find / Which way you want to go / The moment before / You let yourself go," Malo sings to open the song. "You'll laugh just to think / You'll do it even though / You're damned if you do / And damned if you don't / Damned if you will / And damned if you won't."
Brand New Day will be the first studio album to be released on the Mavericks' own record label, Mono Mundo Recordings. The project is set for release on March 31, and the Mavericks will be playing a show in celebration of Brand New Day at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on the same day.
“Brand New Day expresses how we feel about the journey we’re on, as a band, as a family, as a nation, as a world,” Malo says. “Now more than ever, we’re going to need to be more compassionate, more understanding, more loving than ever before.”
Brand New Day is available for pre-order via iTunes. The Mavericks’ last studio album, the Grammy-nominated Mono, was released in 2015; a few months prior to its release, Malo, Paul Deakin, Jerry Dale McFadden and Eddie Perez parted ways with bandmate Robert Reynolds due to an opiate addiction.
