Teenager Dies in Fire, Four Others Escape
HIRAM, Maine (AP) — The Maine State Fire Marshal says that one man died in a fire in home that four others escaped.
The State Fire Marshals Office says a house with no smoke detectors in Hiram caught on fire early Saturday morning.
The office says that 19-year-old Alexander Mudgett died in the fire and lived at the home with friends. Officials believe Mudgett was trying to escape the fire because his body was found on the first floor at the foot of the stairs.
Two men and two women in their twenties were asleep in second-floor bathrooms. The four escaped by crawling out bedroom windows onto roofs and jumping to the ground.
The cause of the fire hasn't been determined. Fire investigators say the fire likely started on the first floor or underneath the home.
