One last weekend!

This weekend there will be gold balls handed out and State Champions crowned in Maine High School basketball. The tournament began a couple of weeks ago and we were pleased to bring you the journey of all our local teams in girls' and boys' basketball.

Senator Collins and Gov. Mills pay a visit

We have been fortunate enough throughout the years to be a small part of some spectacular moments in the lives of the young athletes and their communities. Sitting courtside at the sites in Bangor, Augusta, and Portland has given us the perspective of witnessing communities coming together and lifting up their teams and youth. The athletes have been shown support from parents, relatives, teachers, and we have even seen a Senator and a Governor walk by our booth at these games.

What's on tap this weekend?

The State Championship weekend was lost last year and it has made many teams hungrier to hoist the gold ball for their respective class this weekend. 101.9 The Rock will be covering the Class D games, with the Southern Aroostook girls’ and boys’ teams both playing for the State Championship. At 1:00 p.m. the girls' game will take center stage with Southern Aroostook Warriors taking on Seacoast Christian. The boys’ game that follows features the Warriors boys’ team looking to win their first gold ball since 1991, as they take on Forest Hills and their 65-game win streak.

Behind the scenes can be crazy!

This has been a weekend that is usually crazy for us as broadcasters as we have usually had to travel to multiple sites in the same day. In 2019 we began our day in Portland as we witnessed the Caribou Vikings boys team win their first state title in 50 years, a game that went into two overtime sessions. As we quickly packed, we headed to the Augusta Civic center to cover the Class C girls' game, only to wrap up the night in Bangor for the Class D game.

The County is behind Southern Aroostook!

We have always been pleased that the County teams have had success more often than not with us there, but have our moments of panic as well. The overtime sessions can put us into a time crunch in traveling such a long distance, and also put our producers back in Presque Isle into work overload. There have been moments when we look at each other and say “I don’t know if we will make it on time or not?" Fortunately, we are 100% so far in getting to our sites in time.

We are thankful to be going back this year!

In 2020 our schedule was spread out at a more manageable rate, as we had a game in Bangor on Friday night, and then had to travel to Augusta on Saturday morning for a two-game day. The weekend was chaotic, but we did not realize we would be thankful for the craziness it brought us as in the coming weeks the pandemic hit us! Being shut down for a year made us realize that we miss brining you the successes of these “County Kids”.

By the way, the last time we did this, we had a pretty cool moment! Watch

Experiencing the  joy of victory was ripped from them last year. We are happy that we will have the chance to bring that back to you this year. Good luck to Southern Aroostook Warriors girls and boys. We are rooting for you. For everyone else, how about we relive an incredibly special moment from the last time we covered State Championship weekend? Here’s another look at the memorable Deprey to Deprey moment!
