This Road in Maine Has the Fastest Speed Limit in New England
On this particular highway in our Pine Tree State, you can drive faster than anywhere else in New England.
Maine has a need for speed, and it shows on one special stretch of road where you can really put the pedal to the metal.
Speed limits vary across the United States, with rural freeways in the West often allowing 70 to 80 mph, while limits usually stay around 65 or 70 mph in the East.
It should come as no surprise that Maine likes to stand out. Just as we're the only state with one syllable and the only state that borders just one other state, Maine’s driving rules are a bit different too.
In New England, most states like Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts top out at 65 mph. New Hampshire goes a bit higher at 70 mph. But Maine takes the lead with a speed limit of 75 mph, making it the fastest state in the region.
So, where is the road in Maine where you can drive faster than anywhere else in New England?
This stretch of road, found on I-95 between Old Town and Houlton, has a 75 mph speed limit, the highest on the East Coast. This change occurred in 2011 when a bill was passed to raise the speed limit from 65 to 75 mph, making Maine the first state east of the Mississippi River to do so since the 1970s.
While it might be tempting to go even faster, remember to drive safely. In Maine, speeding fines start at $50, and if you go over the limit by 30 mph or more, it’s considered a criminal offense.
Again, always remember to drive safely and stay alert on the road. It might be tempting to speed up, but your safety is more important. No matter what the speed limit says, keep your focus on the road and follow safe driving practices.
Stay cautious and make sure you get to your destination safely!
