Report Shows Continued Decline in Crime Rates in RCMP Jurisdiction

The New Brunswick RCMP has released its 2014 annual report “In your community”. Enclosed statistics show a continued decline in crime rates in RCMP jurisdiction, notably a 6% decline in property crimes and 2% decrease in crimes against persons over 2013.

The report reflects on some of the past year’s investigations, successes and challenges as well as highlights the work done by our employees to protect the most vulnerable in our communities and to keep communities safe from drugs and the threat of organized crime.

The report showcases some of the work being done to protect children from the threat of online exploitation, with aboriginal communities, as well as our enhanced approach to domestic and intimate partner violence. Also featured is an update on our Youth Intervention and Diversion Strategy, which has led to a continuous decline in the number of youth involved in crime in New Brunswick since 2008.

Traffic fatalities continue to be at the lowest rates seen in decades. However, it remains that close to 35% of people who died in collisions in RCMP jurisdiction last year were either impaired or not wearing a seatbelt. Knowing that these are preventable behaviours, the New Brunswick RCMP has continued its efforts to make our roads safer through a combination of education and enforcement.

The New Brunswick RCMP has adopted a proven, evidence-based and intelligence-led approach to policing over the past several years and the results are showing,” says Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, Commanding Officer of the New Brunswick RCMP. “By making better decisions about how we address crime and putting an enhanced focus on crime prevention, crime rates have continued to decline in our communities. While we're pleased to see crime rates continue to fall, policing is just one part of the equation. Everyone has a role to play and we will continue to engage our communities and partners to keep our province safe."

As in previous years, the report also features sections on the four New Brunswick RCMP Districts which highlight their priorities and the work they are doing at the local level. This includes an update on their crime reduction and prevention strategy, investigational successes, community engagement and their work towards safer roads.
