Old Town Man Going to Prison for 17+ Years for 4th Bank Robbery

An Old Town man received his sentence this week after pleading guilty to his fourth bank robbery in Maine.

What Charges Did He Face?

Donald Turner, 51, was in a Bangor courtroom on Friday where he was sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison. He had previously pleaded guilty to bank robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Where Was the Latest Robbery?

It was in September of 2020 when Turner walked into the Hogan Road branch of Bangor Savings Bank just before 2:30 in the afternoon and demanded money. Court documents state that he gave the teller a note which said that he had a gun and it was a robbery. After receiving about $1,300, he fled the scene.

During the robbery, Turner never actually showed a gun to the people working there. Officials say the gun that was later seized from his apartment during his arrest didn't have a firing pin, and so was not functional.

What Does He Say Motivates Him to Rob Banks?

Turner was convicted of three other bank robberies in Maine. These included two banks in Portland, including Portland Gorham Savings Bank in 2006 and the South Portland TD Bank North Branch two days later.  The third previous robbery happened in 2011 at a Bangor Savings Bank branch in Bangor.

According to the BDN, Turner's lawyer says his client is 'very remorseful' for his actions and the trauma he inflicted on the people from the banks. He said Turner's actions were fueled by his addiction to illegal drugs.
