Aroostook County— Northern Maine Community College will celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a fund-raising walk on October 8 at noon. This is the third year NMCC has held this public event which raises money for Pink Aroostook, a program that provides financial assistance and educational services to individuals in need who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Last year, the walk raised $1,400 which all stayed local.

The walk is dedicated to Heidi Graham who lost her battle with breast cancer in May of 2013. Heidi was an NMCC employee and friend which makes the event a special occasion for NM. Employees and members of the community will have the opportunity to honor her and others who have passed away from, or are currently battling, breast cancer.

“We’re happy to honor Heidi’s memory in this special way, and to give back to the community and to a cause we are passionate about,” explained Linda Mastro, NMCC director of health services and event organizer.

“Our program is so grateful for this financial support,” said Bethany Zell of Pink Aroostook.  “It is the thoughtfulness of community builders like NMCC that make Aroostook County a truly amazing place to live.”

The public is invited to participate in the walk which begins in front of the Smith Wellness Center and will cover the loop around the Christie Building complex.  Walkers can collect sponsor money or make their own personal donations.  Sponsor forms are available on the NMCC website at nmcc.edu or on campus at the NMCC library or counseling office.  For those who would like to support the cause but are unable to walk, donations can be dropped off in person at the NMCC library or mailed to the NMCC Health Center, 33 Edgemont Drive, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
