New England State May Force Theaters to Reveal a Movie’s Actual Start Time
Let’s paint a familiar picture: You roll into the theater for a 7pm movie. You've got your popcorn, your drink, and you’re ready for some cinematic magic. Except, joke’s on you—it’s 7:20, your popcorn is half gone, and you’ve just sat through ads for cars, candy, and whatever. Finally, the previews start. By the time the movie rolls, you're wondering if you should’ve just stayed home.
Enter Connecticut State Senator Martin Looney (yes, his last name is Looney, you can’t make this up). According to the Stamford Advocate, he’s proposing a bill that would force theaters to list the actual start time of the movie you’re paying to see. Because apparently, your time is valuable, and wasting it on an M&M telling you not to use your phone during the movie does not fall under that category.
The Stamford Advocate also stated that theater owners, like one in Stamford, CT are not thrilled. They say these ads and trailers help keep the lights on. If people start skipping them, ad revenue tanks. You may be aware, theaters around the country have been closing down and this move would likely make theaters struggle even more.
Do we endure the ads to keep theaters afloat, or demand justice for our precious time? I do see both sides but my personal opinion, as an advocate for local businesses and movie theaters in general, I would vote to leave it alone. A move like this would likely just further the dipping revenue of movie theaters, forcing more of them to close.
