Mt. View High Schoolers ‘Getting Cold So Others Can Get Warm’
A group of high school students who are part of the National Honor Society at Mt. View High School in Thorndike found a fun, but chilly way to raise money for their community and a great cause this week.
Mt. View High English Teacher and NHS Advisor, Elaine Gray, says 5 Seniors and 9 Juniors traveled to Belfast Bay this week to take part in a special "Polar Plunge" to raise money for a local heating assistance organization.
"The students raised around $700 to donate to the Waldo County Woodshed."

According to their website, the Waldo County Woodshed serves folks all over the county.
"The Waldo County Woodshed is a volunteer-run non-profit group that works to provide free firewood for people in need in the Waldo County, Maine area. The Woodshed was founded in 2015 and currently operates from 8 distribution sites throughout the county."
Gray says the students came up with the idea of doing a plunge all on their own.
"They came up with the phrase 'We're getting cold to help others stay warm.'...The original time frame was to raise money Feb. 12-27, but due to weather and other school events we didn't end up getting to go until March 12."

"The students reached out to school board members, used their induction night to network, went to local businesses, and made an announcement at a school board meeting to raise funds. One parent put word out in the Republican Journal for fundraising as well."

"The students decided to dress in business attire so that when they were doing interviews and greeting people they would look nice, and then they thought it would generate good attention while doing the active plunge too."

"We had our Video Production teacher and a student there to capture footage, and then they wanted to plunge just for fun! "

"This was the first time our NHS has been able to do this, and now the students want to make it an annual thing!"
