Police are investigating after material resembling an explosive device was found in a vehicle during a traffic stop in Newcastle.

Traffic Stop Lead to Investigation

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on Main Street Monday night for a traffic violation.

Driver had Arrest Warrant

The driver had an outstanding arrest warrant and was taken into custody and transported to the Lincoln County Jail.

Material in Vehicle Resembled an Explosive Device

“During a subsequent search of the vehicle, deputies discovered material that appeared to resemble an explosive device in the vehicle,” said Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.

Bomb Squad Secured Device

The Maine State Police Bomb Team and the Fire Marshal’s Office were called to the scene. The device was secured and removed for laboratory analysis.

Active Investigation

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is leading the active investigation. The driver’s name and age were not released.
