A 74-year-old man drowned Friday in Damariscotta Lake after his boat drifted away and he swam after it.

Boat Drifted Away from Launch

Richard Eason from Florida was launching his boat at Vannah Road Boat Launch around 1 pm when wind caused his boat to drift into the lake, said the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Swam after Boat without Life Jacket

Eason jumped into the lake without a life jacket to swim after it. He then disappeared under the surface, according to witnesses.

Body Recovered

His body was recovered around 7 pm in 15 feet of water by the Maine Warden Service Dive Team.

First Responders

Assisting on the scene was Nobleboro Fire and Rescue, Damariscotta Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
