A 66-year-old man died Friday after a house fire in Augusta on Thursday afternoon.

Man with Sever Burns Located Outside House Fire

Michael Keith had severe burns when first responders found him outside the home around 2:03 pm at 347 Riverside Drive.

Life-Threatening Injuries and Medical Attention

He had life-threatening injuries and was immediately given treatment and transported to Maine General Hospital.

Victim Flown by Helicopter to Hospital

Keith was then flown by LifeFlight of Maine to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Fire in Basement of House

The fire in the basement of the house was extinguished by firefighters.

Investigation to Determine Cause and Origin

The Maine Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

Cause and Origin of Fire Confirmed by Fire Marshal

“Fire Investigators have determined the origin of the fire was in the basement, and the cause is ignitable liquids being accidently ignited near the chimney cleanout door,” according to Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, Maine Department of Public Safety.

Multiple Units Responded to Call

Assisting on the scene was the Augusta Police Department and the Augusta Fire Department.
