An Edmundston man has been charged with aggravated assault in connection with a stabbing at a downtown apartment.

Members of the Edmundston Police Force were called to go to an apartment building on Saint-François Street Monday morning to assist a 23-year-old man who had just been stabbed.

The victim appeared to be in critical condition when police and paramedics arrived on the scene, according to Edmundston Police. The man was rushed to the Edmundston Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery in the hours following the attack.

During their investigation, police arrested the alleged assailant, 33-year-old Norbert Levesque.

Levesque was charged in Edmundston Provincial Court Tuesday morning with aggravated assault. He will appear in court again on Friday at 9:30 a.m. for a bail hearing.

The stabbing victim remains in hospital in stable condition and his life is not in danger, police said. The investigation continues.
