Why is the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival moving?

You can celebrate Maine's official treat at the fairgrounds this year because of construction. There is some construction in the downtown area that includes replacing a water main. Apparently, they won't have it done in time for the June 14th celebration.

Is Maine the official home of the whoopie pie?

Well, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all claim to be the birthplace of the whoopie pie according to Wikipedia. Cape Whoopies in South Portland, Maine says that the creation of whoopie pies could be a Maine-rooted tradition.

The exact origins of the whoopie pie are shrouded in mystery, but it's believed that they were first created by Amish or Pennsylvania Dutch bakers in the early 1900s. Another theory is that the whoopie pie was inspired by a similar dessert known as the "black moon," which was a chocolate cake filled with a cream filling that was popular in the Maine area.
