PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Snowmobilers expect their season to stretch into May in northern and western Maine because of the winter’s heavy snow and cold weather.

The Kennebec Journal reported Monday that parts of Somerset and Franklin counties have enough snow to continue the season for at least another three weeks. The season is over in most of southern and central Maine.

Bob Meyers, executive director of the Maine Snowmobile Association, said the season has been the best for snowmobiling in about 20 years.

Snowmobile registrations have risen with the strong season. State officials said there were 73,904 registrations at the end of March, up from 71,474 in March 2013.

State officials said snowmobiling generates about $350 million annually in Maine.
