What Should Be a Maine-Themed Event at the Next Olympics?
Are you watching the Olympics live on NBC or streaming on the Peacock app? How can you not with all the talk of Team USA's men's gymnastics team's 'Clark Kent?' His name is Stephen Nedoroscik by the way, and he brought electricity to Paris this summer and America's spirit by helping get his team their first medal in 16 years!
And of course, the inspirational and superhuman Simone Biles. Fearless, and the best to ever do it, she and her 5 teammates earned gold at the 2024 Olympics for women's team gymnastics with superb performances by all.
Which Maine-Themed Event Could We Propose to the Olympic Committee?
That's what we asked you, and some of your ideas were hilarious while a few we actually thought might have a place at the Olympics one day. If you have a Maine-themed "sport" that's not already suggested or on the list, please add to the Facebook post that is linked below. Here are a few of our favorites so far.
Maine Olympic Event #1: Snow Shoveling
I can just see this at the Winter Olympics 2026 (which are being held in Italy), right?! There is some athleticism needed for snow shoveling, and Mainers certainly practice this "sport" OFTEN. Within the rules, would there be a required beer break after each row is cleared?
Maine Olympic Event #2: Wife-Carrying
As a new resident of Maine, this was the very first time that I have heard about the very popular wife-carrying competitions held here in Maine and they look as hilarious as the title sounds.
You might have carried your wife across the threshold, but now it's time to take it up a notch. The North American Wife Carrying Championship challenges couples to conquer a 278-yard obstacle course—over hurdles, through a muddy water pit, and up a steep sand hill—all for the chance to win the wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash.
The North American Wife Carrying Championship takes place in October at the Sunday River Resort in Maine. This is an annual event that I am now interested in grabbing my bride and competing. But should it be an Olympic sport? If so, the team would certainly be represented by Mainer couples!
Maine Olympic Event #3: Blueberry Raking
From what I hear, it's not an easy job and certainly not for the weak. In a way, wild blueberries are like gold, too. Delicious, full of antioxidants, and blue. Ok, nothing like gold, but if this were to become an event and you do when a medal, can you keep the berries?
